Motherhood is a Condition

No really, there are symptoms and everything!

Condition: Motherhood

Symptoms: sore throat, watery eyes, insomnia, shortness of breath, shortness of patience, mood swings and irritability. Symptoms can be mild to moderate and sometimes severe. Studies have shown a direct correlation with the temperament of the child. Mothers of multiple children may also suffer from insanity.

Root Cause: French kissing. For some reason, pregnancy and childbirth were the end results.

Prevention: The only surefire prevention is devotion to a nunnery but this video is also very effective...

Treatment: For those who have already succumbed to The Motherhood, early and aggressive treatment is key. You may find relief using some of these: personal time-outs, chocolate, screaming into a pillow and the occasional martini. Symptoms are likely to come and go with the passing of time, but rest assured, most symptoms will clear up all together in about 18 years.
Bottoms up!

Dungarees are HOT!

A few years ago, I purchased a copy of People's 50 Most Beautiful People issues. That year, Steve Martin happened to be one of them. I thought his interview was fabulous, so I clipped it and have kept it up on my fridge ever since. So I figured I should share....

"It's very hard being one of the most beautiful people. Having this kind of beauty is actually a burden. Sometimes I go to a party and not one of the other 49 most beautiful people is there. That makes me feel very solitary and alone, because it means I am the most beautiful person in the room.

If I'm going to a party where I know there will be 'less-beautiful people,' I try to dress down in order to hide my beauty. But this seems to have a counter-effect of actually making me more beautiful. I guess me and dungarees are a pretty potent combination.

I try not to lord my beauty over others. This is very hard. I try not to mention that I am one of the most beautiful people, but somehow it always comes out. I will usually only bring it up when I'm asked to do a task, like open a garage door. People seem to enjoy my beauty and are genuinely happy for me, because after I mention it they always say, 'How nice for you.'"

Feature Friday - Pandy's

Q: Tell us a little about yourself; what makes you so special…
Well, what makes me special? My "me-ness". I'm not like anyone else on the planet (I'm sure you can hear the deep sighs of relief, applause and probably some "Thank God"s at that statement) I know I don't march to the beat of the drummer of the masses, but I'm okay with that. I do what makes me feel good. I know I have my faults, but so does everyone else. My kids think I'm the most amazing person on earth, my husband loves me as I am (truthfully, I think he's way more amazing than I am, but don't tell my kids that) and at the end of the day, I can like and respect what I see when I look in the mirror, so to me, those are the things that REALLY matter.

Q: What do you make/create?
I create things from textiles. Fleece apparel, quilts, tote bags, coasters...I'm quite proud of my beer quilts. It took many broken needles, hours of frustration and lots of mistakes, but I came up with the design all by myself.

Now onto the really important questions…

Q: If you were an appliance, what kind of appliance would you be? Why?
If I were an appliance, I'd probably be a can opener. I'm very curious, sometimes flat out nosy, so I always like to see what's in the can. You won't need to pay attention to me every single day, but when you need me, I'll be there, ready and waiting.

Q: Who was the last person you talked to on the phone?
The last person I talked to on the phone was my husband. He drives a tractor trailer, so our main form of communication during the week is via cell phone.

Q: What’s your most embarrassing moment?
My most embarassing moment? God, I have them pretty much every day. I tend to see, speak, THEN think. I did go out with a big glob of used blue painters tape on the arm of my tan suede jacket...like 3 days in a row. No one said anything.

Q: Movie star crush?
Movie star crush...I saw Titanic and then my next trip to the movies was to see Horton Hears a Who with the kids....I'm not really big on pop culture, so I don't know who I'd pick.

Q: Black and white or a hazy grey?
Misty grey (sounds a bit more exotic and mysterious than hazy grey)

Q: Who’s on your iPod?
I don't own an iPod. That was easy to answer.

Q: If Luke Skywalker and Harry Potter dueled, who would win? Why?
Well, by now, Luke Skywalker is probaby taking joint supplements and having some other aging issues (yes, I saw all the original Star Wars movies in the theater..I'm really THAT old) and he does have The Force, but Harry is younger, he has the invisibility cloak and all that magic and love, so I'm putting my money on Harry.

Q: Best advice you ever received?
Best advice I've ever received? When I went to college, my dad said "don't let academics get in the way of your education". I had no clue what he meant, but figured it out pretty quickly and still think it's very true of any situation in life....there is always more to learn than meets the eye. Never, ever discount someone or something as beneath you, or as being insignificant. You can always learn something from everything.

I Should Have Been in Advertising

Can you imagine getting paid to think these up? Fun! Ah, the good ol' days of ignorant bliss and repression. *sigh*

"Blow in her face and she'll follow you anywhere."
Nothing says "I love you" quite like secondhand smoke.

"For Feminine Hygiene use Lysol always!"
You read it right. "It can make all the difference in married happiness."

Wow, even back then we were "sluts."

I think pull tabs were invented for safety reasons. Can you imagine a room full of drunks with can openers?

I know it makes me happy. :o)

What the Heck is a Winklepot?

Well, if you break down the word, you get Wink and le'pot, so it's obvious that it means French pot smoker with an eye tick.

Okay, maybe not. I get asked a lot how I came up with Winklepots as a business name and it's actually my daughter's nickname. Her name is Peri and we started calling her Periwinkle and Winklepots. Yeah, I know, her nicknames are longer than her name, but whatever, parents are weird. I admit it.

I'm secretly hoping she meets a nice young man with the last name of Winkle or Winkler and they get married and live happily ever after. Then have Winklepots of their own. I won't admit that when she announces her first pregnancy to Jim and me that Queens "Another One Bites the Dust" will be playing in my head followed by mwahahahahaha, SUCKER! :oP

Feature Friday - Jewelry by Momma J

Q: Tell us a little about yourself; what makes you so special…
My name is Marianne Jackson. I have been married for 15 years to a wonderful husband who has recently re-enlisted in the Army. We have 3 beautiful daughters - Lauren 14, Cassidy 7, and Abigail 4. I currently work outside of the home, but as of the 1st of June, I will be a full-time stay at home mom - FINALLY!! What makes me special? Wow that's a tough question to answer! I guess what makes me special is that I have overcome A LOT of struggles in my life and have come through with a smile on my face.

Q: What do you make/create?
I crochet and make jewelry. I have been crocheting for about 8 or 9 years now. I make all sorts of times from afghans to baby booties to scarves and much more. I began making jewelry recently and have fallen in love with it. I have done mostly beaded work, but am currently working on wire items - my current project is a copper necklace that I'm really excited about.

Now onto the really important questions…

Q: If you were an appliance, what kind of appliance would you be? Why?
A coffee maker - because I've always said I need a coffee IV hooked up to me to get me through the day!

Q: Who was the last person you talked to on the phone?
My oldest daughter. She is currently spending spring break in Washington D.C. with friends.

Q: What’s your most embarrassing moment?
My kids have been kind enough to cause me many embarrassing moments. Just this past weekend while at the grocery store, my youngest was in the cart at the check-out stand and in a very loud voice said "I don't like that boy." She was referring to the man bagging the groceries. I knew I shouldn't have asked, but I did. I asked her why she didn't like him. And in a loud voice she responded: "Because he's too ugly!" I could not get out of there fast enough!

Q: Movie star crush?
Matthew McConaughey!

Q: Black and white or a hazy grey?
Black and white.

Q: Who’s on your iPod?
I don't have an iPod!

Q: If Luke Skywalker and Harry Potter dueled, who would win? Why?
Duh - Luke. He's a Jedi Knight!

Q: Best advice you ever received?
A: My father taught me my favorite phrase: "Let it go."

Truly Random Thoughts

Some of my favorite random thoughts..........

I have kleptomania, but when it gets bad, I take something for it.

Red meat is not bad for you. Fuzzy green meat is bad for you.

I may be schizophrenic, but at least I have each other.

I am nobody. Nobody is perfect. Therefore, I am perfect.

Dyslexics have more nuf.

When you work here, you can name your own salary. I named mine "Fred."

Reality is only an illusion that occurs due to a lack of alcohol.

I like cats too. Let's exchange recipes.

Get over yourself. Everyone else has.

A Hunting We Will Go

Fertility Balance by abstractheart

Am I the only one bothered by bunnies laying eggs? How did this crime against nature even start? Apparently, rabbits are so fertile, they'll resort to laying eggs if given the chance.
So, I went on an Easter Egg Hunt and look what these randy rabbits left behind!

Feature Friday - Elegant Paperie

I had previously interviewed Marisa with her Elegant Snobbery shop, but I figured with new questions and a new shop, I could feature her again. And it's my blog, so I'm gonna do it. :oP

Q: Tell us a little about yourself; what makes you so special…
My name is Marisa and I'm an at-home-mom with two little girls. I'm also an illustrator on Etsy, selling prints and original artwork and also paper goods made from the designs I create. I also have a collaborative shop with my three year old daughter, Gracie. She does the line work for all of the illustrations and I fill them in with colored pencils.

Now onto the really important questions…

Q: If you were an appliance, what kind of appliance would you be? Why?
The Magic Bullet Blender. Best freakin' as-seen-on-TV creation ever. Want pesto sauce? Just chuck in some almonds, fresh basil, olive oil and a garlic clove, stick on the Magic Bullet Blender and BAM! Looking to make a smoothie? Throw in some fresh fruit, ice, yogurt, stick on the Magic Bullet Blender and BAM! A dash of vodka and enjoy Happy Hour. Seriously, you can't go wrong with a Magic Bullet Blender.

Q: Who was the last person you talked to on the phone?
Actually, it was you, Holly.

Q: What’s your most embarrassing moment?
Um... I really don't want to relive all of Junior High, thank you very much. But lets just say that the worst of it involved me getting sick in the nurses office as a result of very bad period cramps, while the entire boy's gym class(including my crush, my best guy friends, and my brother) listened from the next room. At 28, I'm still not quite over it.

Q: Movie star crush?
James McAvoy. But its not a crush. I am madly and passionately in love with him.

Q: Black and white or a hazy grey?
Depends. Some things are black. Some things are white. And some things can only be described as hazy grey.

Q: Who’s on your iPod?
I might be one of the only people on the planet without an ipod. But in my CD player, you will most often find Muse, Jack's Mannequin, Ghostland Observatory, the Scissor Sisters, The Bravery, Josh Rouse, Kings of Convenience, and Dave Matthew's Band.

I absolutely have to listen to music while I'm drawing, cooking, cleaning... just about all the time.

Q: If Luke Skywalker and Harry Potter dueled, who would win? Why?
Harry Potter. But only because I love Harry Potter and I'm not really into Star Wars. Those Ewoks are pretty cute, but that is about it.

Q: Best advice you ever received?
Just go for it. I used to be very, very scared to do what I loved. The idea that I could actually sell my illustrations, that people would actually BUY them, was so unreal that it scared the living daylights out of me... but you know what? I just decided one day to go for it and my life has completely changed. I don't think there is a single job I could possibly love more than being able to watch my girls grow up while being home with them AND fill my dream of illustrating. Now I just need to get my behind in gear and work towards getting a children's book published. But I'm not scared by the idea anymore... I'm just excited to go for it.

Cute huh? Check out more paper goodies

Yeah, I'm Freeeeeeeee, Free Fallin'..................

Ever been skydiving? I have! What a rush! It almost seems like it never happened. Like I had an out of body free falling experience.

Jim and I went with a group of people from his work. If we had enough people we got a discount. We're cheap thrill seekers. On the drive over to Skydive Oregon, we were both really excited and anxious at the same time. Peri wasn't even a year old yet. I kept thinking, "Crap, what if our parachutes don't open. We never wrote out a will, who gets Peri? Guess we can't die."

Once we got there we had a LOT of paperwork to fill out. Every third disclaimer was a re-wording of "You realize there's a chance you'll die and you're okay with that. We aren't responsible if you die." Yeah, if you weren't nervous before that, the paperwork will scare the crap out of you.

After the ground school on free falling, we picked our tandem partner and headed out. One of the experienced divers sat back and just stared at the group as we ascended. Most of the men I was with were scared to death. It was probably the longest flight ever for them. The diver looked over at me and said, "Wow, you're as cool as a cucumber." Actually, I've been in a LOT of small aircrafts so it wasn't a big deal. Also, I was at the edge of the bench with my tandem partner already strapped to my back. I had about an inch of the bench for my butt to sit on so I was really anxious to get up there and get out.

It was the most surreal experience. The door opened and we didn't even hesitate. I had this feeling like, hey, let's go! We dropped out of the plane and were free falling. It was amazing! We dropped from 13,400 ft and we were free falling at 129 mph for almost a minute. I could feel the air temperature change from freezing cold to warm and summery as we fell.

The free falling was one of the coolest things ever! I was bummed when we had to pop the parachute and slowly wind our way back down to earth. I took in the scenery and just the reality of it all. Once we were down I met up with Jim and the first thing we said to each other was, "Let's do it again!"

I can't believe we didn't take any pictures, we were too distracted with the whole experience. I only have a certificate that proves I suffered from temporary insanity. Oh well. It's an expensive thrill ride, but one that I highly recommend you try at least once. And if you think about it, do your best Tom Petty impression when you fall out of the plane.... "Yeah I'm freeeeeeeeeeeee, free fallin........................."

Woo hoo! Features are Fun!

So, I don't get featured often, I know, completely surprising considering how wildly popular I am (I think I just "heard" your eyes rolls), but I'm being featured TWICE. Oh yeah, twice and one of the local baby boutiques has started carrying my korker bows and clothing. I'll be dropping off several korker sets tomorrow and hopefully some clothing by the end of the week. Woot!

Check it out! I don't get to brag much so humor me, okay? :o)

Feature Friday - Nicole's Homemade Treats

Q: Tell us a little about yourself; what makes you so special…
I am a stay at home mom of two young boys, Zachary, age 6 & Gabriel, age 2 and a military spouse. My husband, Adam, and I have been married for 7 years, not as long as some, but a very enjoyable 7 years none-the-less! Adam is in the Army reserves and on April 4th is being redeployed. My family keeps me hopping, so I use baking and candy making as a stress reliever and creative outlet! Also, making so much candy keeps me from eating it (most of the time).

I am an avid reader; love to garden (I am itching to get outside as I write this) and my boys are the joy of my life. The only reason I have an Etsy shop, according to my husband, is so I can spend what I earn in other shops! I must say I am addicted! The way I see it, I help the economy!!

Q: What do you make/create?
Homemade, all-natural, preservative free, candy, cakes (locally), cookies, granola and pastries. I try to use organic products in all
of my products, but sometimes certain items may not be available.

Now onto the really important questions…

Q: If you were an appliance, what kind of appliance would you be? Why?
I would be my Kitchen Aid Mixer because it packs alot of punch in a small package.
Q: Who was the last person you talked to on the phone?
My sister.

Q: What’s your most embarrassing moment?
Laughing so hard that my drink came out of nose while I was meeting my husbands best friends for the first time.

Q: Movie star crush?
Will Smith.

Q: Black and white or a hazy grey?
Black & White.

Q: Who’s on your iPod?
Mix of everything: country, jazz, pop, reggae, blues, etc..

Q: If Luke Skywalker and Harry Potter dueled, who would win? Why?
Luke! He is a Jedi Knight and they rock.

Q: Best advice you ever received?
From an Aunt: My first born son was very colicky for 10 months, and I was alone most of the time. (my husband was finishing his clinical residency). "Nicole, put Zachary (my son) in his crib with his bedroom door ajar and go sit down for 5 minutes before you go crazy!"
(she made me see that it was okay to do that and I was not a bad mother).

Are you salivating? Me too!!
